Things are a little quiet with the continuing shutdown, so only a few updates today.

  • The government is still shut down. The Senate has now unsuccessfully voted on the House-passed stopgap budget, which would fund the government through November 20th, thirteen times. The House of Representatives has not been in session since September 19th.

  • Federal layoffs during the shutdown have now been indefinitely blocked by a federal judge.

  • The NYT published a report on Monday about the continuing shakeup at the CDC.

  • Stat has a report on how NIH grant recipients have altered the titles of their awards in order to receive funds this year.

  • New College of Florida has volunteered to be the first institution to sign the Compact for Excellence in Higher Education. The New York Times has some additional context.

  • Also in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has directed state universities to “pull the plug” on the use of H1-B visas.

  • Williams College, which made headlines several months ago for pausing its acceptance of NIH and NSF grant funds, has removed diversity-related language from its faculty handbook and will soon resume accepting federal funds.
